THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO/FROM PART ONE

I came to Jazz via Ornette Coleman and Howard Shore's score to Cronenberg's Naked Lunch and No Wave artists like James Chance and Arto Lindsay. As my faulty memory tells me, sometime during 1998 my friend Ara gave me a dubbed cassette tape that had Florida noise punks Harry Pussy on one side and John Coltrane on the other. Mind blown. It ignited a curiosity and mystery around the genre that has grown into a deep love. The first in an ongoing series of adventures and explorations in Jazz, The Shape of Jazz To/From Part One features 26 tracks both classic and current.

Miles Davis / Alice Coltrane + Pharoah Sanders / Pharoah Sanders / Rob Mazurek / Colin Stetson / John Coltrane / Don Cherry + Dewey Redman + Charlie Haden + Ed Blackwell / Ryo Fukui / Thelonious Monk / Jutta Hipp + Zoot Sims / Maurice Louca / Godzik Pink / Ornette Coleman / Makaya McCraven / Jeff Parker / Kamasi Washington / Archie Shepp / Sons of Kemet / Joe Henderson + Alice Coltrane / Duke Ellington / Lee Morgan / Charles Mingus / Art Blakey / Cannonball Adderley / Chet Baker / Bill Evans

NO GODS LOS ANGELES PUNK + HARDCORE SURVEY 1976 - 1984

In honor of Darby Crash who left this world on December 7th 1980, I made a mixtape of some of my favorite LA punk and hardcore tunes. No Gods: Los Angeles Punk + Hardcore Survey 1976 - 1984 is a 2 hour, 50 song survey of the classic SoCal scene from Hollywood to the Valley, Oxnard to the OC, East LA to the beach. I’m too young to have experienced any of these bands when they were stalking stages and creepy crawling at the Starwood, Vex, or Masque but I’m so thankful that they found me when I needed them most. Full band list below (unfortunately there’s no Screamers or Plugz on Spotify so I doubled up on Germs and Black Flag.)

Germs / Bags / Adolescents / The Dils / Alley Cats / Redd Kross / The Weirdos / Wasted Youth / The Zeros / The Dickies / Eyes / Black Randy + The Metrosquad / Minutemen / Fear / The Brat / Circle Jerks / Bad Religion / The Middle Class / Suicidal Tendencies / Black Flag / Urinals / The Crowd / TSOL / X / The Gun Club / The Choir Invisible / The Nerves / The Go-Go’s / Descendents / The Flesh Eaters / The Deadbeats / Suburban Lawns / Fly Boys / 45 Grave / Geza X + The Mommymen / The Vandals / Angry Samoans / D.I. / The Skulls / Social Distortion / UXA / The Cheifs / Black Flag / The Randoms / The Controllers / Agent Orange / Saccharine Trust / Ill Repute / Rikk Agnew / Germs
